As a somewhat neglected member of a large family, Krue spent her childhood in the small town of Beacon Cairn grappling with the consequences of being unremarkable. This trend continued as she approached adulthood; at 16, she had little in the way of friends or ambitions, and began work as a mail carrier. At 18, Krue faced a fate that many Rashemi adults face, and was drafted into the military – specifically, she was drafted into the berserker group known as the Black Lammasu lodge. Both unhappy with her directionless life and with the idea of serving as an expendable front-line soldier for a territorial conflict she had little stake in, Krue dodged the draft, fleeing the mountains and traveling to the ancient forest of Yuirwood. There, Krue built a small cabin – and then another, less shitty cabin – before settling in as a hunter. In doing so, she removed most of her opportunities for humanoid contact, which was a choice that Krue was almost able to convince herself she was okay with. Krue spent many months in Yuirwood alone with her thoughts of inadequacy and her survivor's guilt. To keep herself busy, she spent time studying the ruins of the ancient star elves that dotted the forest, teaching herself outdated Elvish in the process. ### Lost in Barovia Krue was 19 when, during one of her many hunting trips, she – despite her prowess for forest traversal – found herself unable to keep track of her location, getting turned around in unfamiliar surroundings and all-encompassing mists. She had been brought to the Domain of Dread of Barovia, a land under the rule of the dark lord and vampire Strahd von Zarovich. Krue wasn't the only one, either; on the winding forest path, she ran into two others: a reclusive hexblood river elf named Skoll and a secret dhampir named Nia. Since the population was made up entirely of humans, Krue was regarded strangely in Barovia. Moreover, for the first time in her life, people found her worth noting; this would only continue as she and her newfound companions became more renowned due to their escapades throughout the country. Despite this – and despite Krue, Skoll, and Nia being the subject of fortunes that predicted they would face down the lord of land – Krue did not become self-important. In part looking to help people – but mostly just looking for an easy way out of Barovia while making some coin on the side – Krue agreed to help Ismark Kolyanovich (newly made burgomaster of Barovia Village after the death of his father) and his adoptive sister, Ireena Kolyana. Unknowingly the reincarnation of the object of Strahd's affection, Tatyana, Ireena was to be escorted to the town of Vallaki, where she would ideally be safe from further pursuit by Strahd. Though Vallaki proved disagreeable to her goals, Krue found herself growing closer with her companions amidst episodes of saving children – and themselves – from peril. In addition to growing fond of Skoll and Nia, Krue befriended Ireena after the two shared a room during their time in Vallaki. She also built a rapport with many of the townsfolk, such as the brothers Karl and Nikolai Wachter, whom Krue managed to endear herself to with falsified tales of dragonslaying. Krue initially resisted the bonds that she was forming; although she had a history of prioritizing her own safety and happiness, she often found herself hurt by the memory of those she left behind. Moreover, she feared the cost of getting close to others, especially in such a dangerous situation. Despite her best efforts – which admittedly weren't that great – Krue continued to grow closer with those around her. After meeting a half-elf named Rictavio – the alias of the famous vampire hunter Rudolph van Richten, as the party would come to learn – a series of events lead to Krue meeting Ezmerelda d'Avenir, Rictavio's protege. Krue quickly took an interest in Ezmerelda, something she initially refused to interrogate. Ezmerelda, meanwhile, was hostile, guarded, and clearly more anxious than she let on. Over the next several days, many adventures were had by the group. In their search for Rictavio – who had disappeared as soon as they found his protege – they returned to Vallaki, only to be run out of town thanks to a joint effort between Krue and Ezmerelda: Krue refused to be happy for the town's mandatory Festival of the Blazing Sun, and Ezmerelda followed up her offense with a Lightning Bolt aimed at the burgomaster. There was also the journey to the commune of Krezk, where the Krue found the Sunsword, and artifact bearing the soul of Strahd's brother, Sergei von Zarovich. She quickly developed a kinship with the sword as it took to pushing her onward and looking out for her. Centered in the wizard tower – once Rictavio's and then Ezmerelda's base of operations – Krue built a cabin worthy of keeping the party sheltered in the days to come. Krue and Ezmerelda also continued to grow closer, however begrudgingly on Ezmerelda's behalf. Also begrudging was Rictavio, who had returned but refused to engage in the party; Skoll and Krue had no problem physically dragging him out of his wagon and into the cabin for meals, however. ### After Barovia ### Monster hunting years ### Borca ### Witchlight Carnival and Prismeer ### City of Eyes ### Re: Strahd ### Retirement in Waterdeep ## Appearance and Personality Even with her 6’0 frame, Krue is not an imposing figure – her leanness and her baby-face ensures this. Krue has a few notable physical features, many of which can be traced back to her origins as an owlfolk: blonde eyebrows; pointed ears; wide eyes with yellow irises. Her copper-brown hair is short and shaggy, and – although she is perfectly hygienic – she does not pay much attention to her appearance, favoring plain, unassuming clothes. #### Ideals > Truth. It matters greatly to me to understand the whole of things; not just who's good and evil, but why people do the things they do, and what I should be doing about these things in turn. As powerful as she is, Krue recognizes that she is often in a position to call the shots. As such, she feels a duty to discern the truth of the matter when it is not readily apparent. Moreover, when Krue is faced with opposition – usually in the form of a clear antagonist – she can't help but seek out the entire story. This only became more apparent in the years following the demise of Strahd, when Krue encountered situations that were not as black-and-white; like with Ivana Boritsi, for example. Before deciding Ivana's fate, Krue asked questions of her: Is there a reason you're acting this way? Are you going to continue on this path? In asking these questions, and in eventually deciding to spare and aid Ivana, Krue made it clear that she values the answers. #### Bonds Before meeting her friends, Krue had convinced herself that she was okay with – and even preferred – living without attachments. Krue's solitary attitude was adopted largely as a coping mechanism; feelings of loneliness permeated her childhood, and she often felt like an outcast. These feelings were only exacerbated after she ran away from home to dodge the draft. Krue's past reclusive lifestyle led to a brief initial period of defensiveness when faced with friendliness in Barovia, especially where Skoll was concerned. However, Krue quickly grew attached to her new friends – for what seemed like the first time in her life, she felt useful and valued. This attachment quickly became apparent, as Krue built a cabin for her party members shortly after arriving in Barovia. Whether it be because of the shared traumatic experience of Barovia or because of her recently-acquired perception of being valued, Krue is completely devoted to her friends. This extends even more so to Ezmerelda specifically, whom Krue gifted her Charm of Nine Lives less than a month after meeting. > I would do anything for the woman I love. Okay, well, I would do anything for my loved ones in general, really, but. Especially her. Krue is resolute to follow Ezmerelda wherever she goes – and she's been acting on this since meeting the woman. #### Flaws Krue's primary flaws involve her self-sacrificing and internally self-deprecating nature. > Some could say that I don't engage with certain situations the most appropriately. Mostly when it's to do with myself, and how I feel about myself, and the value I place on my own life, and... well, it's not a big deal. When Krue first arrived in Barovia, she often overcompensated for her low self-esteem through bravado. An example of this behavior can be found in the title conferred to her by Karl Wachter – "Dragonslayer of Vallaki" – which she received only after fabricating a story wherein she slayed a dragon. Despite Krue's performance of pride, she has always been poignantly aware of her own shortcomings and flaws, both perceived and actual. Her low sense of self-worth is often at odds with her general optimism; still, Krue tries her best to hide her regrets and sense of inadequacy with friendliness and a smile. Krue's combat style – which nearly always involves using herself as something of a meat-shield – is another indication of how little value she places in her own life, at least compared to the lives of her friends. ## Relationships See Krue's Relationships. ```base filters: and: - file.hasTag("Character") - this.Relationships.filter(value.person == file) formulas: Relationship: this.Relationships.filter(value.person == file).map(value.relationship) properties: file.name: displayName: Person views: - type: table name: Table order: - file.name - formula.Relationship sort: - property: file.name direction: ASC columnSize: file.name: 350 - type: cards name: Cards order: - file.name - formula.Relationship image: note.Portrait cardSize: 200 ``` ## Images !400 !400 !400 !400 !400 !400 !300 !400 !400 !400 --- ## Page Tags/Properties **Tags:** #Character **Category:** Characters
